Serenaded by zipping Broad-tailed Hummingbird scouts and the rumble of thunder, Spring Break Camp was a blast at the Randall Davey Audubon Center! Campers, ages 5-12, gathered to laugh and explore, spending the week hiking through the Pinyon Juniper Woodland, birding in the Wildlife Garden, and playing in our Nature Discovery Area.
Returning and first-time campers had close encounters with Ravens, Mountain Chickadees, and even some of the deer that frequent the center, nibbling the emerging spring buds and new growth. Some of our older campers took on more responsibility, helping staff and welcoming our younger folks to the fold, teaching them how to play our favorite camp hide-and-seek game: Camouflage.
Campers crafted nature journals, birdy bookmarks, and cyanotypes while also learning about animal tracks, bird ID, and pollinators. During habitat day, a bevy of pom-pom caterpillars were created and given habitat diorama homes decorated with willow branches upon which to perch and construction paper leaves to ensure they never go hungry. Much needed rain provided campers with the opportunity to spot the rejuvenated, green desert mosses dotting the center grounds while also learning about cryptobiotic soil and petrichor! Families shared that their campers came home after having the most fun and were becoming “budding scientists.”
