Spring Comes Alive at Trinity River Audubon Center

Head on over this spring to marvel at the wonders of ecology in full bloom.

Head on over to Trinity River Audubon Center (TRAC) this spring to marvel at the wonders of ecology in full bloom. This biodiverse refuge along the Trinity River is the perfect place to unwind, explore, and learn or even get a little lost (in the best possible way). With each visit, the landscape reveals something new, reminding us just how alive this place truly is.

As you wander the trails, you’ll be greeted by a dazzling mix of blooms, birds, bugs, and other beautiful signs of the season. The Texas Paintbrush takes center stage this time of year, its neon red blooms lighting up sunny prairie spaces around the Center. By May, Firewheels, Bee Balm, and a host of other wildflowers join the display, painting the landscape with color and movement.

The show doesn’t stop at the prairie. Venture into the Great Trinity Forest to find Roughleaf Dogwood trees dressed in white blossoms, often buzzing with busy pollinators. Together, these native plants create a healthy, thriving habitat that supports the wildlife that depends on TRAC. Pause near the tubular red blooms of Coral Honeysuckle and you may spot a Ruby‑throated Hummingbird stopping by for a drink of nectar. Out in the tall grasses, Dickcissels make their return after migrating from Central and South America, filling the air with their distinctive calls. And if a song catches your ear that sounds like falling sparkles, look to the treetops you just might glimpse the red, blue, and green brilliance of spring’s star performer: the Painted Bunting.

For those who prefer a guided experience or enjoy gathering with community, TRAC offers a full calendar of fun and engaging events this May. The month kicks off with Herd Here on May 3, a family‑friendly chamber music performance from 11:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. On May 9, celebrate World Migratory Bird Day with hands‑on activities including bird banding, our annual Birder Bowl, and guided bird walks. Keep the birding fun going with the Big Sit on May 10 an opportunity to enjoy birdwatching from a comfortable seated spot.

Families can also join us for Science Sunday, held on the second Sunday of each month, featuring STEM‑based activities designed for ages 6–12. Later in the month, dress up and support the Center at our annual Scissortails and Cocktails fundraiser on May 14, or slow things down with a peaceful weekend bird walk on May 16 or May 24.
