Recognizing volunteers and the impact they make on conservation is a long-standing tradition at Corkscrew Swamp Sanctuary. On March 24, we hosted the annual volunteer recognition event in celebration of the 112 volunteers who donated more than 7,500 hours over the past year.
With the theme "Fueling Our Future," the event welcomed volunteers to socialize with staff over live music, beverages, and a bountiful buffet. During the evening program, Florida Gulf Coast University Professor Win Everham provided a heartfelt and educational presentation about our changing world.
Seven volunteers reached milestones in their service hours and were commemorated on the brand new volunteer recognition board in the Blair Visitor Center, which highlights individuals who have volunteered 500 and up to 10,000 hours.
Reaching 500 service hours were Dan Carpenter, Charlie Rocks, Brent Smith, and Robin Stark. Lisa Schroder and Jack Shine surpassed 1,000 hours, and Murray Yost surpassed 2,500 hours.
The recipient of this year's Volunteer Impact Award was Charlie Rocks.
Corkscrew volunteer efforts have contributed to building a stronger, more connected, and more hopeful future for birds, other wildlife, and people. Audubon is deeply grateful for their volunteer service and proud to honor the difference they continue to make every day.
"Conservation isn’t only about protecting land or species—it’s about connection," says Volunteer and Membership Manager Kristina O'Hern, who organized the event. "The connections between people and place, between effort and impact, and between today and tomorrow thrive because of volunteers," she concludes.
Services provided by vendors including Jovens Sax, Artichoke & C0mpany, C Liston Communications, and Naples Engraving were made possible, in part, by Panther Island Mitigation Bank.
