In November, less than one-tenth of an inch of rain was recorded at the Sanctuary. In December, we recorded 1.27 inches of rain. This was 74% of the average for the month. By January, the Sanctuary was 21% below average for total rainfall during the water year (June-December), and 35% below average total for the calendar year.
The water level recession rate during this time was lower than what we saw in the fall when air temperatures were higher, but water levels continue to drop.
In January, the Sanctuary received 2.2 inches of rainfall, which is just about the average. The badly-needed rainfall raised the swamp water level 2.5 inches, returning levels to what we saw at the end of December, but are still considerably lower (by more than six inches) than our historical average before the year 2000.
