Audubon partners with a variety of organizations to support community science that can produce actionable data for bird conservation. Bird data reported by community scientists has been used by researchers since the 1930s to report on the health of bird populations.  Participating in or supporting a local Christmas Bird Count, Great Backyard Bird Count, Climate Watch, or using other data reporting applications gets volunteers and community members engaged in collecting data to drive science forward, while learning and being actively engaged.

Volunteering opportunities may include:

  • Participating in or coordinating a Climate Watch team (January-February; May-June)
  • Joining, supporting, or leading a Christmas Bird Count event (December)
  • Joining, supporting, or leading a Great Backyard Bird Count event (February)
  • Joining, supporting, or leading a Big Sit (October)
  • Supporting any type of nature-based community science
