As state legislatures begin preparing for their 2027 sessions, now is the time to start planning for the policy discussions and legislative activity that will shape the year ahead. Early preparation can help you stay informed, anticipate emerging issues, and engage effectively throughout the session. In the coming months, we'll share webinars, updates on legislation we're tracking, and other resources to help you stay ahead of and engage on key developments. To help you get started, here are five key steps you can take now to prepare for 2027.
1. Develop your conservation story
Prepare a short personal message about why birds and the Great Plains matter to you and why state policy decisions are important.
2. Build relationships before the session starts
Reach out to your state lawmaker(s) now and introduce yourself as a constituent who cares about birds, habitat, and healthy communities.
3. Attend local legislative events
Participate in town halls, coffees, and listening sessions to learn lawmakers' priorities and share conservation perspectives.
4. Invite lawmakers into the field
Offer opportunities for legislators to visit local birding areas, wetlands, grasslands, farms, or community projects to see conservation in action.
5. Prepare to take action quickly
Sign up for Audubon legislative webinars, updates, and
action alerts so you're ready to contact lawmakers when important bills are introduced and critical debates are happening.
