Conservation Volunteer Days in Arizona

Our Goals
Protect and restore vital bird habitats at the Rio Salado and throughout Arizona while engaging communities in stewardship and conservation action.
What We’re Doing
We offer hands-on ways to make a difference through habitat restorations, cleanups, community science, and educational programs that help protect birds and support healthy ecosystems across the Rio Salado and Arizona.

Burrowing Owl Relocation in Arizona

For more than 10 years, Audubon Southwest has partnered with the Wild At Heart Raptor Center to support Burrowing Owls across Arizona. Once common throughout central Arizona, these small, ground-dwelling owls are rapidly disappearing due to development. To give them a fighting chance, volunteers help build artificial burrows, construct temporary release tents where owls acclimate for about a month, and later remove the tents so the birds can fly free. Wild At Heart programs are no longer hosted at Rio Salado Audubon Center, but are still carried out throughout other parts of the state where owl relocation is critically needed.

Volunteer Volunteer Days and Habitat Restoration at Rio Salado

Volunteer at the Rio Salado Audubon Center in South Phoenix to help support and restore the Salt River and its surrounding habitats. Activities include river clean-ups, invasive plant remove as part of the Rio Salado Habitat Restoration Working Group program, and planting days to restore native trees, shrubs, cacti and pollinators to build a resilient natural ecosystem. The activities for each event are based on seasonality and relevant need. Restrooms and indoor resting areas are available throughout the day. These hands-on cleanups are a meaningful way to support local wildlife, improve the health of the river and riparian areas, and connect with engaged community partners outdoors.
