We offer seasonal ecology programs and guided walks that invite you into the preserve to learn straight from the landscape. Join us for hands-on wildlife tracking at scent stations, introductory birding and bird walks with opportunities for close-up viewing, and guided hikes along the Loop Trail to experience seasonal change, habitat diversity, and the research and monitoring that power Starr Ranch conservation work.
Join Starr Ranch Sanctuary for seasonal adult ecology programs and guided nature walks. Offerings typically run from late winter through early summer (generally February–June), with sessions on Fridays and select Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m.
Programs are led by experienced naturalists and field educators and often connect to Starr Ranch’s ongoing wildlife research and monitoring.
Group size: 10–12 participants
Cost: $10 per person, per two-hour session (checks preferred)
Step into the role of a wildlife biologist and learn how researchers study large mammals in Southern California using scent-baited “scent stations.” Participants practice identifying signs left behind, including tracks and scat.
A welcoming introduction for new birders, followed by a guided bird walk to look for the most common species found at Starr Ranch. Experienced birders are welcome, too. Feeding platforms may be set up to attract songbirds for close-up viewing with a spotting scope.
Explore the sanctuary on a guided walk along the Loop Trail. Many participants enjoy returning in different months to see how the landscape changes from late winter into spring. (Moderately strenuous, with one steep uphill and one downhill stretch.)
