Birds are powerful indicators of environmental health - when bird populations thrive, Texas communities do too. Audubon’s research shows that we have a meaningful window of opportunity to strengthen the landscapes birds depend on, ensuring a healthier future for both wildlife and people.
That's why our policy work focuses on protecting birds and their habitats while responding to the changing conditions impacting wildlife and communities across Texas. We focus on science-based, durable policy solutions that are developed in collaboration with a broad range of stakeholders that include other conservation organizations, landowners, and community- based organizations. With a 120 year track record, Audubon plays a unique role in engaging decision-makers from across the political spectrum, pairing high-level advocacy with grassroots mobilization to influence government and private sector leaders toward conservation solutions.
Our Priority Work
Audubon focuses policy efforts across four key areas aligned with the strategic vision of Flight Plan:
• Protecting Critical Habitats - We advocate for funding and policies that restore and protect Texas' coastal ecosystems, grasslands, and other vital bird habitats, supporting both migratory and resident species.
• Advancing Climate Solutions - We work to advance responsibly-sited renewable energy and transmission infrastructure that avoids, minimizes, or mitigates impacts to birds, while promoting nature-based solutions like grassland preservation and coastal restoration.
• Building Community Connections - We support initiatives that expand access to nature for all Texans and promote education programs that engage young people in conservation careers and environmental literacy.
• Supporting a Conservation Economy - We support programs that incentivize private land stewardship, promote bird-friendly building standards and lighting ordinances to reduce collisions in urban areas, and strengthen eco‑tourism opportunities that benefit local communities.
