113th CBC US National High Species Count Summary
By Brent Ortego
Birders reported 640 species and 48 infraspecific forms during the 113th Christmas Bird Count (CBC) with four additional species being reported from count week. This was the lowest total of species since the 97th CBC season. This season’s tally was not helped by the absence of three unique Hawaiian CBCs. The Little Egret observed by many at Mid-Cape Cod, MA, was a new species for the CBC. The Dusky Thrush at Anchorage, AK, which was new for the CBC as a count week bird last year was also found in count week this season. Birders continue to show their abilities to find single individuals of species lurking in their count circles. This season high counts of 40 species/forms were represented by one individual, and 22 percent of the species by 10 or fewer. The number of species reported as one individual declined by 30%, but counts of 10 or less was the same.
All-time highs were reported for 31 species/infraspecific forms. Most new high counts surpassed relatively recent records. However, there were eight new records that exceeded previous highest counts that were at least 20 years old. The oldest record to crash stood for 60 years before Nantucket, MA, beat the Monomoy Point, MA, old record with 41,836 White-winged Scoters. Orange County (coastal), tied a 44 year old record from Nogales, AZ, with five Western Flycatchers, Santa Cruz County, CA, topped a 30 year old record of Marin County (southern), CA, with 8178 Pacific Loons, and Bellingham, WA, beat the 28 year old record of Western Sonoma County, CA, with 9116 Pine Siskins. Another 28 year old record fell when Monroe County, IL, posted 8986 American Goldfinches topping Grand Rapids, MI, previous mark. Two of Salt-Verde Rivers, AZ, record counts fell when Tucson Valley, AZ, posted tallies of 19 Plumbeous Vireos and 492 Verdins. Lastly, Tucson Valley beat its own 20 year record by tallying 820 Gila Woodpeckers. National Highs were more spread out this season with at least one being obtained by 46 states and 354 CBCs. Matagorda County Mad Island Marsh, TX, regained Number One with highest tallies for 17 species and two infraspecific forms. Atascosa Highlands, AZ, was 2nd with 16 species and O’ahu: Honolulu, HI, was 3rd with 15 species and one form. Tucson Valley, AZ, had 13 species and one form, Hawai’i: Volcano 10 species and one form, Coot Bay-Everglades N.P., FL, and Patagonia, AZ, 10 species, Kaua’i: Kap’a, HI, nine species and one form, Point Reyes Peninsula, CA, Dade County & Gainesville, FL, Nantucket, MA, and Weslaco, TX, nine species, and Santa Barbara, CA, and STA5-Clewiston, FL, eight species. All other CBCs had eight or fewer high counts.
California was Number One again with 119 species and 10 infraspecific forms. Florida topped Texas for the first time in four years with 98 species and two forms. Texas suffering through a historic drought was 3rd with only 81 species and five forms. Arizona had the highest tallies for 74 species and five forms, Hawaii with 53 species and six forms, Massachusetts 23 species and one form, Alaska 23 species, Louisiana 20 species, Oregon 16 species and four forms, Colorado 15 species and two forms, Washington 14 species, and New York with 10 species and one form.
Only counts for resident species, infraspecific forms, and exotics that do not have editorial comments questioning the validity of the results were accepted for this report. High counts for exotics without known established populations will be displayed, but will not be added to results for the CBC or state. If I make a mistake, please let me know and I will include corrections next year at the end of the column.
