At a Glance

Native to dry woodlands of southwestern Africa, the Rosy-faced Lovebird has established a thriving population around Phoenix, Arizona, with numbers estimated at over 2,000. Escapees from captivity are sometimes seen elsewhere. The birds around Phoenix are usually seen in small flocks. Pairs often nest under the dead fronds of untrimmed palm trees or in holes in giant saguaro cactus.

Description

Sexes similar — Length: 5.9 - 6.7 in (15 - 17 cm); wingspan: 9.8 - 10.6 in (25 - 27 cm); weight: 1.4 - 1.8 oz (40 - 52 g). The Rosy-faced Lovebird is a tiny parrot with a short, pointed tail. Mostly green, with blue rump. Bright reddish pink face fades into pink wash on chest. Juvenile has paler, grayer face and chest.
