As the name suggests, this is an excellent plant for attracting hummingbirds, producing bright red to red-orange, trumpet-shaped flowers from August to October. It tolerates full sun to partial shade and is drought tolerant.

The stems grow clusters of small, yellow/light brown flowers that form a cone-like inflorescence. This plant grows in full sun, and in dry, sandy or rocky soils.

During March and April, tiny, yellow flowers sprout from clusters of yellow to red-brown seed cones that grow out of the branches’ nodes. This plant grows in arid environments, and in rocky or gravelly soils.
