About Seabird Institute

Protecting seabirds and the places they need since 1973.

For over 50 years, the Seabird Institute has protected and studied restored seabird colonies along the coast of Maine. This work continues today as we expand our reach, supporting Tufted Puffin conservation efforts along the California Current, contributing to restoration and conservation efforts across the globe, and inspiring our worldwide audience to protect and advocate for birds and the resources on which birds - and people - rely.

The Seabird Institute believes that inspiring all people to love and protect nature is best achieved when we embrace diversity as a value and practice. In the same way seabird colonies need many types of seabirds to take hold and flourish, an organization thrives when it includes a diversity of people and perspectives. We recognize that inequities are widespread and create gaps between our present reality and our aspirations. The Seabird Institute is committed to:

  • Reflecting the diversity of the community in our board, staff, volunteers, and members.
  • Ensuring our internal culture, business practices, and programs are welcoming and advance our diversity goals.
  • Empowering people to make positive changes in their community and our planet.
