United States Christmas Bird Counts (CBC) reported their most species at 675 species, 79 infraspecific forms (forms), and 35 exotic species (ex). The Jouanin’s Petrel at San Francisco, CA, Common Snipe at Midway Atoll, HI, Yellow-headed Caracara at Galveston, TX, and Siberian Stonechat at Bolivar Peninsula, TX, were new species for U.S. CBCs. Pink-footed Goose at Quinnipiac Valley, CT, Wedge-tailed Shearwaters at Midway Atoll and North Kona, HI, Gyrfalcon at Lewiston-Clarkston, ID, Eastern Wood-Pewee at San Bernard N.W.R., TX, and Varied Bunting at Green Valley-Madera Canyon, AZ, were only found during Count Week.
Only one CBC can have the most species in the country, but many counts can have the highest tally of a species. This season 48 states and 381 CBCs had the highest count for at least 1 species. California led all states with high tallies of 136 species, 22 infra specific forms, and 13 exotics. Florida was 2nd with high counts for 99 species, 6 forms and 9 ex. Texas placed 3rd with high counts of 93 species, 8 forms, 3 ex and 1 cw. These were followed by Arizona with high tallies for 79 species, 5 forms and 1 cw, Hawaii 70 species, 4 forms 2 ex and 2 CW, Alaska 28 species and 1 form, Oregon 19 species and 5 forms, Massachusetts 18 species and 2 forms, Louisiana 18 species, Washington 16 species and 2 forms, and New York 11 species and 2 forms. All other states had less than 11 high counts.
Kendall Area, FL, had the highest tally for 20 species in the country. Gainesville, FL, followed with 17 species, Midway Atoll, HI, 16 species, San Diego, CA, and O’aho: Honolulu had 15 species each, Tucson Valley, AZ, had 14, and Brownsville, TX, 12 species. Atascosa Highlands, AZ, had 11 and Green Valley-Madera Canyon, AZ, had 10 species. CBCs with 9 high species tallies were AZ, Ramsey Canyon, CA, San Francisco, FL, Homestead, and TX, Falcon Dam, and CBCs with 8 high species tallies were FL, Coot Bay-Everglades N.P., TX, Harlingen and Matagorda County. All other CBCs had high counts of 7 species or less.
All-time high counts were tied or topped for 37 species this season. New high counts typically surpass the previous record by a small percentage. We have 3 new records this season that have stood for at least 37 years. The Gray Gull was originally reported on, LA, Sabine N.W.R. CBC during the 88th season. The next one was reported this season at TX, Brownsville CBC 37 years later. An outstanding number (651) of Red-crested Cardinals were reported on the, HI, O’ahu: Honolulu CBC during the 88th CBC season. It was topped with a tally of 679 on the same CBC this season. Planning, scouting birds and recruiting additional birders are the typical ways for producing high tallies of a species for a CBC. Another way is to start a new CBC. This was what was done at the, TX, Camp Bullis CBC. They reported 420 Black-crested Titmice which was 86 more than the previous high produced 43 years earlier.
