In celebration of Detroit’s expansive greenspace and vibrant bird habitat, we propose a friendly contest to see which of the four largest parks in the city of Detroit have the greatest number of bird species. This community science initiative will focus on learning and utilizing digital tools such as eBird and Audubon Migration Explorer and engaging Detroit neighborhoods and neighbors in birding during peak migration season, May 1-May 30, 2026.
Participants will download the free eBird app and use it to record every bird species they see at their chosen park. At the end of May 2026, the park with the highest number of unique bird species recorded by participants using eBird will receive special recognition. This recognition will include a sign installed in the park and a digital sign installed on their website, acknowledging the park’s bird biodiversity. The City of Detroit will lift up the winner on its website and on social media accounts. It will highlight the number of species reported and encourage park goers to continue the use of the community science tools throughout the year. Participants will not only contribute to important bird conservation data but will also connect with fellow bird enthusiasts of all ages and experience levels to get better acquainted with Detroit’s largest parks, perhaps for the first time.
