Also called Candleberry, this perennial, medium to large shrub or small tree grows 3 to 12 feet high with a crooked trunk, pale gray bark, and waxy leaves that are aromatic when crushed. This plant grows in partial shade, and in moist clay, loam, or sandy soil, and attracts butterflies as well as birds that eat its small, white berries.
