This deciduous, perennial shrub has light-green lanceolate leaves, and red-orange, tubular flowers. The plant dies during the winter and re-emerges out of the still intact roots each year, growing again to 3 to 5 feet tall. It is drought, heat, and cold tolerant, and is adapted to a variety of dry to moist soils, including well-drained sand, loam, clay, and limestone. This plant grows in full sun and partial shade, sprouting conspicuous flowers that are highly attractive to butterflies and hummingbirds.
