Emblematic of the southeastern U.S, the Live Oak, also known as Encino, and Southern or Coastal Live Oak has a massive but short central trunk and long, arching branches. It averages a height of 50 feet and width of 80 feet, though large, older specimens may reach a crown diameter of 150 feet. Live Oak holds its leaves through the winter, losing them only when new growth appears in spring. It grows in full sun to partial shade and dry to moist soils, and is resistant to browsing by deer.
